Skype video hits Android, faces competitors

Skype has updated its Android app to support video chat, a major upgrade for the telecom mobile app. Version 2.0 of Skype for Android lets you place or receive video calls with other Android users, as well as iPhone, Mac or Windows PC users that have the most updated version of Skype. The new video feature supports both Wi-Fi and 3G calls, though you’re generally better off with W-iFi. Skype’s a little late to the video chat market on Android, with the capability already offered by Tango, Yahoo! Messenger and ooVoo to name a few. It was Skype’s recent acquisition of Qik that likely catalyzed video chat support on Android devices. Qik was a leading app for video chat, with a string of exclusive apps for carriers and manufacturers as well.
One downfall for Skype’s video upgrade is the lack of handset support, with two-way video calls limited to the Nexus S, HTC Desire S, and Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Neo and Pro. It’s a common predicament for most apps that use an Android device’s camera and/or video playback. Hulu Plus is also restricted in handset support at launch. It’s partly due to Android devices’ varied OS use, which is subject to Google’s schedule for over-the-air updates. It can cause some strife amongst service providers and manufacturers, with recent rumors that Verizon isn’t too pleased with the latest Gingerbread 2.3 updates for Motorola devices.

App stores for business and consumers

Another area that’s also losing its uniformity amongst Android devices is the marketplace experience, with the Cisco Cius introducing its own app store, called AppHQ. The network equipment provider is stepping gingerly into the Android market, launching an enterprise-grade tablet for the business sector. Given security concerns and companies’ desire to control employees’ device operation, the AppHQ store is an alternative to the Android Market, distributing business-friendly tablet apps controlled by IT administers.
AppHQ is also an opportunity for Cisco to potentially generate some revenue through this type of controlled software distribution, which seems a promising proposition for all app marketplaces. A recent study from tech research firm Canalys indicates that app stores’ revenue will nearly double to $14.1 billion next year, reaching $36.7 billion by 2015. The Android Market is a major influence in this exploding industry, with approximately 100,000 apps lining its virtual aisles. With revenue coming from paid apps and subscriptions, Google’s certainly carving out quite a business model with its Android Market.

iPhone 5 Rumor Roundup [INFOGRAPHIC]

Not since the first iPhone was rolled out in 2007 has there been so much chatter about one gadget. There have been so many rumors about the iPhone 5, it’s difficult to keep them all straight, but those talented French artists at Nowhere Else have laid them out for us here in beautiful style. Merci beaucoup, mes amis!
Be sure to check the blue progress bars for the likelihood of each one of these rumors to actually occur. They look mostly accurate to us, with one exception: After last night’s revelations about Sony’s involvement with the next iPhone’s image sensor from Sony’s Sir Howard Stringer, that 50% chance of a better camera seems like it ought to be around 80 to 90%.

Best free iPad apps of all time

What are the best free iPad apps worth downloading right now? Although there are a lot of great free iPad apps to choose from, time is money and here we are recommending the best free iPad apps of all time.

Netflix (Free)

Stand up in front of the room and admit you’re a Netflix addict. Sure this app runs on the iPhone, but on the iPad it expands to its true destiny. Browse films, read plot information and viewer reviews, and then manage your Netflix queue by touch.
The best part? Stream the Watch Now movies or TV shows without hiccups to the iPad’s display and use the DVD-like controls to pause, fast forward, or rewind. Pause or stop the video and your place is bookmarked so that if you return to it over another device, you can pick up just where you left off.

textPlus (Free)

Ask any teenager about the best apps for iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad and textPlus will be on the list. This app lets you send and receive text messages to and from anywhere (any carrier, even internationally) for free. The ads pay the bills for the service.
On the iPad you’ve got the big screen keyboard for crafting your succinct witticisms and lots of real estate for reading the threaded conversations and group text chatter. The app provides a new number for you – so the first time you use it – you’ll have to clearly identify yourself to your recipients. Teens don’t seem to mind.

MoMA AB EX NY (Free)

Got art? Tour through NYC’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) “Abstract Expressionists of NY” exhibit one artwork at a time in this beautiful app designed for the big iPad screen. Browse the artwork full-screen then zoom in for even more detail. Get bios and video information about the works or step outside to the surroundings of New York via a map and learn about the studios, galleries, and hangouts of the featured artists.
Don’t miss the video embedded at the Appolicious link above showing a cat reviewing the app.

Kayak HD (Free)

Like the best iPad apps, Kayak HD is actually more elegantly designed and easier to 0use than Kayak’s own Website. Kayak is the Uber-search tool for travel deals as it searches Travelocity, Priceline, and Orbitz all simultaneously.
All in one screen you can explore a part of the world on a map, enter your travel dates and other parameters, see a list of popular searches for the cities that interest you, or browse hotels at your destination with your fingers. Note that the HD version strangely offers a little less functionality – no car rental options for example – than Kayak’s non-HD iPhone app, but if you can live without those features you’ll love it.

Gilt (Free)

While the economy still struggles we can satisfy our shop-‘til-we-drop ways by looking for luxury goods at a bargain. Enter Gilt for iPad. The fashion and accessories for sale in this app are so gorgeously displayed, you’ll think you’re leering through a spy cam at some rich person’s private closet. The touch interface fits perfectly because you want to reach out and stroke the merchandise.
Gilt members will enjoy the fact that it syncs all your account information from the web so it knows your credit card info and the last set of items in your cart. Everyone will enjoy the average 50%+ discounts off the retail price of name brand clothing.
Carry the world in the palm of your hand. Google Earth for iPad is a stunning digital globe that you can manipulate in a number of exciting ways. Spin a 3D satellite image of the world, then zoom in, or fly directly to the current location of your iPad. Browse Wikipedia articles that are geo-located, or peruse the Panaramio layer that shows you millions of photos tied to their locations. It’s the smartest globe you’ll ever encounter.

NASA App HD

You think NASA just does space tech? Think again. NASA Ames engineers have created an out-of-this-world iPad app that will keep you better informed on NASA missions, space science, extraterrestrial discoveries, and news. Stream live NASA TV, or view their stunning Pictures of the Day. Explore your universe with science facts and photos, or keep up with current missions in real-time by reading the latest NASA tweets or tracking the international space station’s movements. With a couple of taps, you can share the information and articles over Facebook, Twitter or email.

NPR for iPad

Enjoy National Public Radio like never before with NPR for iPad. Designed especially for the iPad (because surveys say over 5% of NPR’s listening audience own one), the app combines magazine and radio formats. Play audio from NPR feature stories and shows while flicking around text and photos. Explore NPR photo galleries and video content from their website. Share your finds over Facebook and Twitter or upload your own thoughts.

NYTimes for iPad

Who better to create a truly digital newspaper than the New York Times? NYTimes for iPad feels like the newspaper seen in the film Minority Report. Flick forward and backward through articles, or bring up a table of newspaper sections with one tap and then jump to your interest area. Play HD video embedded within articles, or scan through multimedia slide shows. Press “update” and get a scrolling page of the latest news from NYTimes.com broken out into convenient sections.

Flipboard

What if your friends created a new magazine for you to read each day based on the content they chose? That’s kind of what Flipboard is like. Using your social network, it creates an iPad-style flick-and-touch magazine full of text, images, and video content created or shared by your friends. Browsing content feels easier with this app than on Facebook or Twitter’s own websites, and content updates happen in real time so you’ll likely see something new every time you launch the app.

GoSkyWatch Planetarium for iPad

Ever go stargazing with an astronomer? GoSkyWatch Planetarium feels like there’s an astronomer at your side. Use the location feature to view the sky as seen from your city, then explore it in detail by focusing in on the constellations, planets, stars or deep sky objects. Ephemeris data on each object helps you find it if you have a telescope handy, otherwise, use the accelerometer of the iPad to scan around based on position. You can spin the night sky by adjusting the time or the date, or run a time-lapsed animation of star movements. You’ll be amazed at the vast universe above you.

Virtuoso Piano Free 2 HD

Carry a piano in your hands. This app provides two sets of piano keys, one above the other, each about an octave and a half of a piano keyboard. The sound is the closest you’ll get to a real piano on any iPad piano application. Multi-touch allows you to play realistic sounding chords and actual songs. Tap the arrows to move each keyboard up or down by one key or one octave. You can also display the notes as symbols on each key for help playing a tune. With Virtuoso, you can tickle the ivories anytime, anywhere.

Wikipanion for iPad

The iPad makes reading easier. So, text-heavy information on the web fits naturally on the device. Enter Wikipanion. Now you can access over two million flick-friendly Wikipedia articles by entering text into the search bar. The layout is beautiful and the navigation is fast. You can also access the Wikipedia Picture of the Day in full, HD glory. The pay version of this app allows you to read Wikipedia articles offline, but as long as you have an Internet connection, you won’t miss it.

Weatherbug Elite for iPad

People are fascinated by weather, hence the existence of the 24-hour Weather Channel. Scratch the same itch with the free Weatherbug Elite for iPad app. Pinch and zoom a map of your current location, your state, the country, or the world, then jump to radar showing precipitation, temperature, humidity, and many other views. Save your favorite locations for quick access or view webcam feeds from around the country, a five-day forecast, or even weather update videos.

ABC Player for iPad

Who needs pay TV? ABC Player is similar to the Hulu for iPad app, but it’s free. Of course, you’ll only find ABC shows – like Lost, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and others – but there are enough great ones to keep you watching for hours. Tilting your iPad provides full-screen landscape viewing. You can search by show name or browse through the entire week of primetime in calendar. Yes, there are commercials, but they are short and infrequent, so overall, it’s the best free portable TV around.

Android 3.1 tablets on the way; Cut the Rope launches exclusive on GetJar

Another iPad competitor is headed our way, with the unveiling of the Archos G9. It’s one of a string of Android tablets revealed in recent weeks, all vying for the opportunity to knock the iPad off its throne. The G9 is reportedly packed with enough hardware to go up against Apple’s domineering tablet, with a dual-core ARM-powered processor at 1.5GHz and a super-slim Seagate hard drive with 250GB of storage. Other features include HDMI output with 1080p media playback and support for Wi-Fi and 3G. But what makes the G9 stand out even amongst other Android tablets is the Honeycomb 3.1 OS. Making it even more attractive is the price: the Archos G9, which is available as an 8-inch or 10-inch version, is offered at $279 and $349 respectively. Expect the G9 to hit stores in September.
With the G9, Archos joins a growing group of manufacturers that include Samsung and Motorola, but more than a year after first hitting the scene, the iPad continues to rule the tablet world. And while Android’s managed to take over the smartphone market, the realm of tablets is a new opportunity for rivaling operating systems. HP’s going the Apple route, preparing webOS for its debut, coupling it with HP’s own device, the TouchPad. Whether or not HP can be a true competitor to iOS or Android remains to be seen, but its OS/device strategy takes cues from Apple, while its interface works quite similarly to current Android devices. The biggest benefit HP has is learning from Apple and Android’s years of experience, with aims of becoming the third player in a two-player game.
One noticeable affect of our addiction to mobile devices is an increase of data usage, with Wi-Fi-connected smartphones and tablets overtaking desktop platforms. Carriers are responding in kind, stripping away unlimited data plans and charging for all the additional access for which mobile devices hunger. AT&T and Verizon are both anxious to cap data usage, even as they roll-out high-speed networks like 4G. The promise of millions of connected devices is a point of competition amongst carriers, and this comes through especially when you look at the marketing campaigns around 4G networks. AT&T and Verizon have different ideas of what really consists of a 4G network, incurring ideas of regulation regarding their branding efforts from the public sector.

GetJar exclusively launches Cut the Rope on Android

On the entertainment side of things, Android users can finally get their hands on an official version of Cut the Rope. This week’s been a waiting game, deciphering teaser tweets and trying to determine if they were part of another Cut the Rope scam. But the popular iPhone game has finally launched an Android version, available from GetJar, where it will be available as a free download for six days before appearing in the Android Market. GetJar’s own third party marketplace is becoming a viable competitor to Amazon’s Appstore, both of which appeal to Android gamers with various promotions. It’s another big win for GetJar, which gained a great deal of notoriety with its exclusive Angry Birds for Android launch last year.

The New Nokia N9 First MeeGo-Based Smartphone Is a Beauty

Nokia N9: First MeeGo-Based Smartphone Is a Beauty:

Stephen Elop said that Nokia would unveil its first MeeGo device this year, and he just made good on his word with the N9 (also known as Lankku). Just as we spotted earlier, the N9 is a solid slab of 3.9-inch AMOLED screen (854 x 480) sans a keyboard or physical switches of any kind (well, aside from that oh-so-necessary volume rocker and camera button). The phone comes with 16GB or 64GB of onboard memory and 1GB of RAM wrapped in a polycarbonate shell that's colored all the way through, so dings and scratches won't show -- unless the wounds run deep, of course. An OMAP3630 1 Ghz processor does the computing while a PowerVR SGX530 GPU is around for graphical grunt work. Connectivity comes courtesy of quad-band GSM and penta-band WCDMA radios, plus Bluetooth 2.1, NFC, and GPS. There is also a dedicated camera button for the 8 megapixel wide-angle shooter, which is capable of aperture F2.2 for low light picture taking and true 16:9 720p video recording. Oh, and it's an AF shooter, not EDoF.

The entire thing measures 116.45- x 61.2- x 7.6-12.1mm and weighs 135 grams, with a battery capable of lasting up to 50 hours (music), 4.5 hours (720p video), or between seven and 11 hours (GSM yappin'). You'll also get gratis turn-by-turn drive and walk navigation with voice guidance in Maps, a dedicated Drive app, proximity sensor and a choice of hue: black, cyan, and magenta. Other hardware specs include 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, an ambient light sensor, compass, orientation sensor, a micro SIM slot, tethering support and a 3.5mm "AV connector." It'll be humming along on MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan, with apps being compliant with Qt 4.7 and HTML5 support bundled in.

As for software? Aside from Angry Birds Magic, Galaxy on Fire 2, Real Golf 2011 and OpenGL ES 2.0, those who take the plunge will be greeted with a Webkit2-based browser, pinch-to-zoom support, unified notifications for Facebook, Twitter and RSS feeds in the Events view as well as social networking profiles and status updates merged into phone contacts. MeeGo touts a user interface simplified to three home views -- events, applications and open apps -- with a swipe gesture able to take you back to the home view. For those looking to expand upon what's loaded from the factory, Ovi Store access is included, but we've no idea what kind of pricing will be affixed. We'll be getting a fair bit of hands-on time with this guy in just a few hours, so keep it locked here for our first impressions!

Fresh iPhone Apps for June 21: P5P – Generative Sketches, MosaicArtist, Hard Lines, TITUS

Tap into your creativity with today’s Fresh iPhone Apps, starting with P5P – Generative Sketches, an app that combines math and lines to create interesting drawings, and MosaicArtist, which breaks up your photos into tiled mosaics. We’re also bringing you a few new games to try out: Hard Lines, a modern take on Snake with multiple game modes; and TITUS, a compilation of five mini-games centered on a story of political conquest.

P5P – Generative Sketches (iPhone, iPad) $1.99

P5P creates “generative sketches” by basically performing math equations and graphic the results on your iPhone’s screen. The app works by allowing you to set parameters, choosing what kind of sketch to create, how many lines, and a host of other numbers. With the information on-hand, P5P creates a drawing in real-time.
You can also interact with the sketches by touching the screen and moving your iOS device, which alters and affects the way the sketches are generated. When you’re done, you can save your generated drawings, print them, and even share them online.

MosaicArtist (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Much like P5P, MosaicArtist is an app that uses math to create interesting visuals. Adding a photo to the app allows you to alter it by giving it a mosaic, or tiled look, by adjusting several parameters within the app. MosaicArtist does all the math for you, altering your image and reworking the entire thing to appear as if it is made out of tiles.
There’s not much more to MosaicArtist beyond that. The app creates vector images when it alters your photos. Once you’re done, they can be quickly and easily saved to your camera roll and downloaded to your computer or shared by email.

Hard Lines (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

You’ve probably seen Snake in action before: it’s a game in which you control a growing snake that moves around a grid. In the original game, the goal is merely to grow your snake as much as possible without it running into a wall or itself; in Hard Lines, however, things are a bit more competitive. Hard Lines includes six different game modes, including a survival mode in which you’ll battle other snakes for as long as you can stay alive, and modes in which you’ll attempt to get the highest score possible in a short amount of time.
Your snake is controlled by swiping touch controls throughout all six game modes in Hard Lines. The game packs OpenFeint leaderboards so you can track your high scores against other players, along with achievements to give players a reason to keep hammering away for more points.

TITUS (iPhone, iPad) $1.99

You’re Titus, a local man charged with deposing the corrupt mime Desmond from his seat of mayor of their town. But Titus can’t just jump from agoraphobic clockmaker to mayor of his town – he needs to climb the political ladder, and that means winning a lot of elections. To do that, Titus needs to play a little dirty, by spreading rumors, finding lobbyists, raising money and buying positive press.
It sounds boring, but TITUS skips over the actual politicking by filling the intervening moments with lots of arcade-style mini-games. For example, spreading leaflets into constituents’ mailboxes is done by playing a Doodle Jump-like game in which the Titus bounces from one mailbox to the other, trying not to fall down the screen. The game mixes strategy, an interesting art style, and diverting mini-games to keep the whole process interesting.

Lady Gaga's Love Affair With Versace

Lady Gaga performs during the 2011 Europride in Rome on June 11, 2011.
Photo: Getty Images

There is this thing that is quietly happening (or has been since Tavi The Style Rookie went all grunge and Alexander Wang crushed some velvet and paraded out platforms) that MTV Style cannot be more happy about. It appears that the collective world at large has gone back over their old In Living Color tapes or reminisced about House Of Style and has reached this massive no-duh conclusion: The early '90s were mind-splayingly rad. With the clashing primary colors and Benetton prints and baby-faced Linda Evangelista in Unzipped there was unbridled enthusiasm and a sort of disregard for mores and FASH-rules, which sounds very much like the zeitgeist being heralded by our girl Gaga. So to hear that the Lady, between playing a keytar made of hair on X-Factor France and continuing to don her aqua-hued 'do, has gotten her monster claws into the Versace archives is certainly happy-making, because it is clearly the best and most natural next step.

According to the German TV program Vox and Bild, Lady Gaga has confessed to having a "love affair with Donatella," and has received access to items that haven't been touched since before Gianni died. She says she is "obsessed" with his graphic printed silks and haute couture (a piece of which she wore to Europride above, which Gaga Fashionland IDs as being from '92).
Lady Gaga supporting young, emerging artists is one of the most fantastic things about her, and her X-Factor hair-fit certainly wasn't a part of Gianni's vision. But let's not play: If Donatella Versace blessed you with her wand-like pink frosted nails and allowed you to raid one of the most encapsulating archives of all time, you'd roll up your oversize sleeves and get down to color-blocking business. A vintage Gaga is as exciting as the one made of materials that won't biodegrade until the early 23rd century.

And my song ["Bad Romance"] is about whether I go after those [sort of relationships] or if they find me. I’m quite celibate now; I don’t really get time to meet anyone.”

Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis Grope Each Other At MTV Movie Awards 2011 (PHOTOS)

Well here's a way to kick off an awards show.

Presenting the first golden popcorn at the MTV Movie Awards, Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis set the bar high -- and very blatantly promoted their new movie, "Friends With Benefits" -- by putting on a gropefest on stage. Explaining that they were basically brother and sister, the pair did what brothers and sisters rarely do: grab each other's most intimate parts.

Also, the parts they're marketing for their new sex comedy. Which Timberlake made clear, when, after making a joke about the "winner" of the award, he said, "What a shameless reference to my penis!"

Lady Gaga’s ‘Meat Dress’ Goes To Rock Hall Of Fame

CLEVELAND, Ohio --
Lady Gaga made history at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards when she turned butcher’s cuts into high fashion.
On Thursday, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will unveil the singer’s infamous raw-meat dress to the public. The dress — made of layers of Argentinian beef — was kept in a meat locker, placed in a vat of chemicals and then dried out by taxidermists in California before being transported to the museum.
Hall of Fame spokeswoman Margaret Thresher says the dress took on a “dark, beef-jerky” look while dehydrating, so it was painted to look “fresh” afterwards. The entire process took several months to complete.
The dress is being displayed as part of the “Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power” exhibit, which runs until February 2012.

Justin Bieber Hits Gym

Justin Bieber is working out hard to stay healthy and impress his girlfriend, Selena Gomez. During his trip home to Stratford, Ontario, the 17-year-old rockstar squeezed in a workout at Anytime Fitness June 1 — and HollywoodLife.com has all the details of his impressive routine.
“Justin was definitely on a mission to pump up,” club member Tyrell Ogloff — who saw the singer working out at 7:30 a.m. — tells us. “He was on the treadmill for about 30 minutes working up a sweat and then he went to the free weights to lift.
He adds, “It’s funny because he’s pretty small but can pump a lot! He benched 120 pounds for his chest and did about 400 crunches and sit-ups to build his core. He’s in really good shape.”
We know how hard it is to bulk up, especially when you’re young and have a fast metabolism, like the Biebs. Luckily, judging from their PDA, Selena, 18, loves him just the way he is!

Justin Bieber, A Country Boy

Before he took home the trophy for Collaborative Video of the Year at the CMT Music Awards on Wednesday night, Justin Bieber professed his love for all things country on the red carpet.
“I’m really glad to be here,” he told CMT, with the guys of Rascal Flatts by his side. “It’s great.”
It wasn’t just an exciting night for him, but also for Mama Bieber, who happens to be a big country music aficionado. “It’s great; it’s so many people my mother admires, ’cause she loves country music, and I do too,” he continued. “So it’s really great to be here with Rascal Flatts.”
It was on the set for his winning video, “That Should Be Me,” that Bieber first cut his hair. In the end, the sacrifice of his trademark locks seemed worth it.
“Some of the fans liked it; some of the fans didn’t. They were just upset he cut it,” Bieber joked, nodding to Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox.
The video for “That Should Be Me,” a Never Say Never – The Remixes track (which was a reworked version of the song that first appeared on My World 2.0) is a lo-fi, behind-the-scenes, “making of the video” performance clip. But it was good enough to beat out the likes of country music superstars like Jason Aldean with Kelly Clarkson; Kid Rock featuring Sheryl Crow; Loretta Lynn, Miranda Lambert and Sheryl Crow, as well as Aaron Lewis featuring George Jones and Charlie Daniels.
“First of all, I just want to say how honored I am to be here … with Rascal Flatts,” Bieber said while accepting his first country award. “How amazing are Rascal Flatts, everybody? I want to thank my mom. I want to thank my family. And I want to thank Rascal Flatts for even jumping on the song with me.”

Windows 8 Preview

Judging by recent previews of Windows 8, Microsoft's operating system is in for a big makeover in its next version. It's designed to run on both tablets and PCs, though exactly what about the OS will vary between those two devices isn't yet clear. Visually, perhaps the most striking characteristic of Windows 8 is its use of tiles reminiscent of those found in Windows Phone 7's UI.

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) began its Windows 8 publicity blitz in earnest Wednesday, previewing an operating system that appears to break from the norm in more ways than one.
It has a tile interface similar to that of Windows Phone 7, it will run on PCs and tablets, and it will support both touchscreen and mouse-and-keyboard interactions
Further, developers will be able to use common Web technologies such as HTML 5 and JavaScript to create Windows 8 apps.
The upcoming version of Windows represents a fundamental change in the OS's design that Redmond hasn't attempted since the launch of Windows 95, said Mike Angiulo, a Microsoft corporate vice president, during a Windows 8 presentation at the Computex conference in Taipei.
The new UI has apparently been well received.
"It looks like the user interface is a winner, building on the differentiated and well-received Windows Phone 7 UI, except with bigger and richer tiles," Al Hilwa, a program director at IDC, told TechNewsWorld.
"Feedback from everybody I've talked to is very good, and the only downside is folks would like to see Windows 8 this year instead of in 2012," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld.
Microsoft declined to provide further comment on Windows 8, with spokesperson Jackie Lawrence pointing TechNewsWorld to the company's website for published information relating to the new OS.
